« Ken Aicha Sy est née à Dakar, en 1988, d’une mère franco- martiniquaise, Journaliste et d’un père sénégalais Artiste plasticien , El Hadji Moussa Babacar SY dit ELSY, un « militant de la liberté de création impliqué dans la défense et la promotion des artistes sénégalais et africains ».

Elle grandit à Dakar et fait sa scolarité au Lycée Français Jean Mermoz. Après l’obtention de son baccalauréat, elle s’installe à Paris pour poursuivre des études supérieures en Design, Histoire de l’art et Aménagement d’espace. Après son cursus universitaire, elle rentre au Sénégal en 2011. 

C’est la période du Fesman (Festival Mondial des Arts Nègres). Sensible au milieu créatif et à la cause des artistes sénégalais, elle décide de monter une plateforme culturelle nommée Wakh’Art pour participer à la valorisation de l’offre culturelle sénégalaise. En 2012, elle crée le lieu La Boite à Idée, pour offrir un espace de rencontre aux artistes. Après sa rencontre avec l’artiste Moulaye, ils décident de créer le label de musique sénégalais Wakh’Art Music, pour accompagner dans leurs développements, des artistes de la scène musicale sénégalaise. Elle se bat au quotidien pour apporter un changement positif et une amélioration dans le paysage culturel sénégalais. »

Biography

« Ken Aicha Sy was born in Dakar, in 1988, from the union  Franco-Martinican, journalist mother and a Senegalese father, El Hadji Moussa Babacar SY, also known as ELSY, a « militant for the freedom of creation involved in the defense and promotion of Senegalese and African artists »

She grew up in Dakar and attended the Lycée Français Jean Mermoz. After her baccalaureate, she moved to Paris, France to pursue high education in Design, Art History and Space Planning. After her university studies , she returned to Senegal in 2011. 

During the Fesman (World Festival of Black Arts). Sensitive to both the creative space and the Senegalese artists demand  , she decided to set up a cultural platform named Wakh’Art (speak arts in wolof)to enhance and foster  the Senegalese cultural plateform. In 2012, she created the place “La Boite à Idée” (Box of Ideas), to offer a meeting, brainstorming space and hosting for artists from Senegal and other countries in the world. With the artist Moulaye, they have  created the Senegalese music label Wakh’Art Music, to accompany Senegalese artist career development.. With her concept Art as a development factor she works on a daily basis to bring positive changes and improvement in the Senegalese cultural landscape

Since her return to Senegal in December 2012, Ken Aicha Sy has engineered many cultural projects and events. She is the founder of the cultural platform Wakh’Art, which has promoted culture in Senegalese since its inception in 2012, and she developed the conceptual creative space La Boîte à Idée, which has received hundreds of artists and researchers during the past eight years from all over the world. These two initiatives stand alongside Ken Aicha’s work in production, particularly in music, the label Wakh’Art Music as well as her work in the visual arts through various exhibitions developed in the Senegalese capital, Dakar. It is possible to see such work in any of the following examples: “Baadaye” – International Exhibition as a part of “Connecting Afro Futures” at Kunstgewerbemuseum in Berlin from August to December 2019; “GeewBi Exhibition” at the French Institute Dakar in May to October 2020 ; Contemporary Art Elements at La Maison des Esclaves in collaboration with ICSC in Gorée in MAY 2021 – January 2023 ; TARA OCEAN – Corps Noir , Abstraction et Rayonnement ” at the French Institute in Dakar September 2022 to February 2023. Currently, the Senegalese-Martinican curator is working on two exhibitions, one at the British Council Senegal in June 2023 and the other at the Musée Théodore Monod in November 2023. Ken Aicha Sy continues to facilitate training courses for cultural entrepreneurs between Senegal and the rest of the continent (Burkina Faso, Bujumbura), an educational cause she has passionately pursued for several years.
